Description
In sport and leisure horses, and unfortunately in every second foal, gastric irritation can be observed, which can lead to gastric ulcers. Secondary problems can include damage to the intestinal flora of the large intestine and diarrhoea. EQI® Gastiv is a feed supplement for horses and ponies to support the acid-base balance in the stomach and the digestive processes in the large intestine.
For optimal functioning of the stomach and intestinal tract

- Supports the regeneration of the gastric mucosa
- Reduces diarrhoea symptoms
- Supports digestive processes in the large intestine
- Improves general health and performance
- Promotes optimal digestive system function
EQI® Gastiv is a feed supplement for horses and ponies to support the acid-base balance in the stomach and the digestive processes in the large intestine. In horses, gastric acid is produced continuously as they naturally feed for 16 hours a day and large amounts of saliva are also passed into the stomach with the forage they chew. The bicarbonate content of saliva lowers the pH of the stomach, protecting the mucous membrane from irritation. Irritation of the gastric mucosa can lead to gastritis or gastric ulcers.
In horses, gastric acid production is continuous and not linked to feed intake, so if feed intake is interrupted, gastric acid accumulates, increasing the risk of gastric ulceration. Secondary problems may include damage to the intestinal flora of the large intestine and diarrhoea. Animals with diarrhoea have a normal dry matter content in their manure, but the problem is caused by a disturbance in water balance, which results in too much water being excreted. Moisture can also cause skin irritation, depending on the severity of the diarrhoea. There may also be a disturbance in the absorption of phosphorus, calcium and magnesium, depending on where in the intestinal tract the problem occurs.
Sensitive, nervous horses are more likely to develop intestinal problems. In most cases, gastrointestinal problems are diagnosed too late and in the worst cases go unnoticed. In addition to 90% in racehorses, 60% in sport horses are affected by equine gastric ulcer syndrome, and a significant number of hobby horses and roughly one in two foals suffer from gastrointestinal problems.
The mechanism of action of EQI® Gastiv
EQI® Gastiv is a special combination of active ingredients. It contains calcium and magnesium-rich algae and live yeast that improves colon function. EQI® Gastiv works by lowering the pH of the stomach in the horse's digestive tract, protecting the stomach lining and wall. The live yeast is highly effective in supporting the digestive processes of the large intestine, promoting the growth of lactic acid utilising and fibre digesting bacteria, thus supporting the ideal colon flora and preventing acidification.
Red algae, a natural ingredient in EQI® Gastiv, contains 74 different minerals, including high levels of calcium and magnesium, which are highly bioavailable. EQI® Gastiv's high calcium and magnesium content, combined with its unique properties (acting almost like a sponge to absorb excess stomach acid), provide up to 2.5 times the acid buffering capacity of limestone-derived stomach acid binding supplements for horses.
EQI® Gastiv is a complementary medicine for the optimal functioning of the digestive tract in the case of gastric mucosal disorders. It reduces diarrhoea symptoms, supports the digestive processes in the large intestine and improves general health.
The use of EQI® Gastiv ensures a more balanced pH level in the horse's stomach. Excess acid is no longer able to attack the stomach lining, preventing the development of gastric ulcers. The feed enters the intestinal tract from the stomach without excessive acidity. This creates a better balance of gut flora bacteria, allowing the gut microbiota to function better, which generally results in better digestion of the feed and absorption of nutrients.
Application proposal:
- In foals during the weaning period
- For pre-existing lesions of the gastric mucosa, including gastric ulcers
- For diarrhoea
- Stress (transport, racing, changing stables, hospitalisation)
- Increased workload (training, competition)
- Use of medicines (anti-inflammatory drugs, etc.) that are hard on the stomach
Basically a useful accessory for all horses, from ponies to high performance sport horses. EQI® Gastiv is particularly recommended for horses that are sensitive to stress, as it helps to maintain an ideal healthy acid balance in the stomach.
