Description
Pure sugar cane molasses from non-GMO sugar cane. It gives a pleasant taste to the food, so it has an appetizing effect and binds dust. It is a very useful energy booster.
Nowadays, many horse owners have reservations about feeding molasses.
Molasses has been used in horse feed since the 19th century. Interestingly, molasses contains about the same amount of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) as barley or maize. Most of this is either sucrose (glucose and fructose) or free glucose and fructose. Both fructose and glucose are readily absorbed in the digestive tract and fructose is converted to glucose in the liver. Therefore, it can be said that feeding molasses raises blood glucose levels in a similar way to digesting starch.
Molasses is very effective in reducing the porosity of cereal-based feeds, thereby reducing the incidence of respiratory disorders. It can also be an effective carrier for certain medicines and complementary feeds, and can be used as a natural "binder" for pelletising. Its pleasant smell makes it a natural flavour enhancer in horse feed.
Due to its high sugar content (about 50%), molasses is also a direct source of 'fast energy' for horses, which can be incorporated into the feed as immediately available energy for horses in hard work. For healthy horses, it can be very useful to supplement a highly digestible starch source (e.g. oats, barley) with molasses, which can act as a glycaemic buffer for the horse.
In addition, molasses is not only rich in sugar, but also in electrolytes, potassium, which is important for the water balance of organs, bones and muscles, and B vitamins.
It is important to know that horses suffering from metabolic diseases (such as hoof inflammation, insulin resistance, Cushing's disease, metabolic syndrome) should not be fed either molasses or high starch feeds.
So, as with all aspects of life, it is important to feed molasses in moderation and gradually.
